Circa 1770. George III. Robert Adam (1728-1792) designed this mantel. The center tablet is delicate florals and the corner blockings are acanthus leaves. The side frieze panels have arches equal in size to the arches on the jamb panels. The Ionic scrolling capitals are supported by slightly tapered legs supported by solid plinths. The Robert Adams ideal of harmony is achieved magnificently in this mantel.
